Australia is never at a loss for terrifying things that could potentially kill you or scar you for life. But those things are usually grounded in reality, at least. For example, there are giant snakes, deadly spiders, and unstoppable wild fires in Australia that won't hesitate to end you.
However, like most other places on the planet, Australia is plagued by certain horrors of the inexplicable variety. Pilliga Forest is home to such frights.
Pilliga Forest stretches for about 1,150 square miles across New South Wales.
It's the largest nature preserve in the state.
But as you might have guessed by now, Pilliga Forest harbors some unsettling secrets.
The main access road through the forest is a highway that's frequented by long-haul truckers, pretty much all of whom refuse to enter the forest at night.
A quick search of Australian trucker forums for "Pilliga" unearths a plethora of bizarre stories from those who have been caught in the forest after dark. The most common sights reported are the so-called "Min Min Lights." These weird lights approach people before suddenly disappearing.
Truckers who stop to sleep in the forest often leave with disturbing stories to tell.
Many report being woken in the middle of the night by their trucks shaking back and forth for hours. They also hear the clanging sound of twisted metal. One trucker said that he huddled inside of his cab for the whole night. When dawn finally broke, his trailer was completely shredded, and there were bits of metal strewn all over the road.
The most terrifying story about Pilliga Forest, though, comes from a former trucker known only as Bongo.
Bongo told his story a few years ago on a late-night Australian radio show called Overnights. According to Bongo, he made a wrong turn and ended up driving for several hours in the wrong direction through the forest.
He pulled over when he realized that he was nearly out of fuel. Luckily, there was another truck passing by, and Bongo flagged it down for directions. The driver was unhelpful and told Bongo that he was in the wrong place, and that he should not be caught here after dark.
Bongo had no choice but to spend the night in his truck.
In the wee hours of the morning, Bongo began hearing terrible noises outside. Naturally, he was terrified. He cowered in the cab for hours, hoping that whatever it was would go away. He had no such luck. Suddenly, something ripped off the door and dragged Bongo out of the truck and into the forest.
After a few moments of pure terror, Bongo said that the thing took him to a clearing with pairs of severed human legs hanging from all of the trees. Apparently, Bongo didn't meet the creatures requirements for legs, so it took him back to the truck just before dawn.
It should be noted that ever since that night, Bongo has been living in a sanitarium. If that was freaky to read, just wait until you hear him tell the story. You can find his account here. Just another reason to avoid Australia, am I right?
