Not many people know this, but Houdini was an ardent critic of popular spiritualists. He claimed that they were nothing but crooks. As the ultimate test of their claims, he and his wife Bess made a pact. If Houdini died before her, she would hold an annual seance to try and contact his spirit.
On October 31, 1926, Houdini died after his appendix ruptured. Every Halloween for the next 10 years, Bess held a seance and attempted to contact him as per their agreement. By 1936, after nine years of nothingness, Bess declared that that year's seance would be the last one. They never heard from his ghost, but that doesn't mean the last recording isn't creepy. In fact, it's quite disturbing.
