DECEMBER 1, 2015  —  By Joe Welkie

In this day and age, it's hard to find material that will genuinely unnerve people. Almost everyone is a know-it-all, and honestly, everyone thinks they're tough as nails.

But I'm willing to guess that most people haven't seen these completely spooky articles. They're absolutely chilling.

3. Armin Meiwes

4. Cotard Delusion

This man is Jules Cotard, and his mental illness is known as "walking corpse syndrome." The sufferer believes that he or she is dead and is still walking the Earth. People around the world fall victim to this disorder every year.

This is thought to be one of the most haunted places in the world. A hospital that treated victims of tuberculosis, this asylum saw many deaths, including the suicide of a nurse who hung herself on the premises.

This man hijacked a plane, extorted ransom money, and jumped out of the plane with a parachute. He was never identified, and it remains the only unsolved aviation piracy plot in American history.

Nine hikers mysteriously died on this hiking path. What is most bizarre about this is that it was determined that their tent was ripped from the inside out, and all of their bodies were found facing down. None showed signs of struggle.

8. James Bulger's Murder

This boy was lured away from a mall by two 10-year-olds who mutilated his body and face so horrifically that an autopsy couldn't determine his cause of death. The boys never gave an explanation for their actions.

9. The Boy in the Box

A little boy's body was found in a cardboard box in Philadelphia back in 1957. He was never identified because his body and face were battered beyond recognition.

10. Gertrude Baniszewski

This woman's actions were called "the single worst crimes perpetrated against an individual in Indiana's history." She murdered a teenager named Sylvia Likens with the help of Likens' friends, boyfriend, and sister.

11. Iroquois Theater Fire

This deadly fire killed almost 600 people in Chicago. What makes this so horrifying is that an inspector came to the theater days earlier and told the owners that the building was ill-equipped to handle a fire.

12. The McMartin Preschool

The McMartin family ran a preschool where several acts of child abuse and sexual misconduct occurred.

13. The Death of Elisa Lam

This woman's body was found in a hotel's water tank after complaints that the water tasted strange. She had gone missing weeks before that, and when the inspector came to check on the tank, they found her body inside.

14. 11B-X-1371

These two 19-year-olds went on murdering sprees, filming almost all of their kills. They were reckless beyond belief, but they never revealed their true motives.

Well, I don't know about you, but I'm going to have a hard time sleeping tonight. How could people do such horrifying things? You think you know humanity's limits, but people never cease to shock and amaze when it comes to brutal violence.
